Mac wrestlers vie for freestyle, Greco titles

Nine members of the McMinnville wrestling team participated in the Oregon State Cadet and Junior Freestyle and Greco State Championships, held at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis on May 3. Cadet wrestlers ranged in age from 14 to 16, while any wrestler still in high school was eligible to join the junior division.

Freshman Brian Barnes wrestled at 195 pounds in both the cadet and junior brackets. Barnes won the cadet division at 195 in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling and finished second in the junior division in both disciplines. Barnes’ brother, senior J.T. Barnes, won the 160-pound junior Greco-Roman championship and finished second in the 160-pound freestyle championships.

Junior Aspen Nelson took second in Greco-Roman (113 pounds, junior) and third in freestyle (113 pounds, junior). Sophomore Bobby Crowston finished third in Greco-Roman juniors at 152 pounds and fourth in freestyle, also at 152 pounds.

Alvaro Flores (fifth at 113 pounds, Greco-Roman; fifth at 113 pounds, freestyle), Steven Weant (sixth at 126 pounds, Greco-Roman) and Vince Williams (fifth at 220 pounds, Greco-Roman) also participated with the Grizzlies’ contingent.
