Mac teen arrested in park incident

Suspect allegedly displayed knife and took victim’s cell phone

A 17-year-old McMinnville boy was arrested Friday after he allegedly pulled a knife on a 13-year-old boy and stole his cell phone at Discovery Meadows Park, located next to Columbus Elementary School at 1300 S.W. Cypress Lane.

The suspect was identified as Erik Duran. He was lodged in the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Facility in McMinnville on one count each of attempted first-degree robbery, second-degree theft and unlawful use of a weapon.

McMinnville police gave this account:

The victim and his mother went to the police station about 3:30 p.m. to report the incident, which they said had occurred about 15 minutes earlier. They said the suspect and victim were acquaintances who encountered each other at the park and began talking.

They said the suspect displayed a knife and asked the victim what the victim had on him. The victim said he only had a cell phone, which the suspect took.

Duran was contacted at his residence, police said. The knife and phone were both recovered there, they said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Detective Michelle Formway at 503-434-2340.
