Mac man dies in Highway 18 head-on
Sgt. Brad Hessel of the Oregon State Police identified the victim as Charles Salinas of 1834 N.W. Wallace Road.
Salinas’ nephew, 13-month-old Alex Salinas, died last October when he was struck on a Newberg street by a car driven by Derick Wiltshire, 50, of Dundee. Wiltshire was not charged in connection with the toddler’s death.
Hessel gave this account of Tuesday’s crash:
Salinas was westbound in a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier when his car crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2005 Freightliner pulling tandem trailers. Dale Boekhoff, 44, of 517 N.W. Blair St., Sheridan, was driving the big rig for CRC Transport Inc. of Salem.
Boekhoff and a passenger in the car, Araceli Salinas, 10, of the Wallace Road address, were transported by McMinnville Fire Department ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center. She was admitted in serious condition. He was released following treatment.
Boekhoff wasn’t wearing a seat belt. Information regarding seat belt usage was not immediately available for the occupants of the car.
The commercial rig’s fuel tanks leaked diesel, triggering a cleanup effort coordinated by the Oregon Department of Transportation and Northwest Firefighters HazMat.
OSP was assisted by the McMinnville Police Department and Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office.
Highway 18 remained closed in both directions until about 4:45 Wednesday morning.
