The McMinnville wrestling team won a big dual meet Thursday, beating McNary 57-22 in Salem.
“McNary has won the last two regional titles [in] dual meets and tournaments, so it was a nice win for our guys,” McMinnville coach Shawn Keinonen said.
Mac followed that up with a sixth-place finish Saturday at a tournament in Cascade.
The Grizzlies got off to a great start, winning 10 of the first 11 matches of the meet, scoring falls in six. They lead 57-4.
Aspen Nelson pinned McNary’s Riley Repp in the first period at 106 pounds, and Steven Weant was awarded a forfeit at 113 pounds, giving the Grizzlies a 12-0 lead. Bryce Branson pinned Mike Mata in 1:17 at 120 to increase Mac’s lead.
The Grizzlies lost their first match at 126 pounds, with Dalton Donaldson losing 13-3 to Mike Phelps. They rebounded with a 13-1 win by Manny Humlie at 132, and Jered Sublet won by technical fall at 138 pounds.
Bobby Crowston started a streak of pins for the Grizzlies at 145. Crowston pinned Jess Gomez early in the third period, and Rylan Blair (1:43), Alex Kiess (1:24) and Tiger Paasch (1:04) all easily dispatched of their opponents.
Mac’s Chris Cerda (195) and Cameron Strybing (220) both lost, and the Grizzlies forfeited at 285 pounds to finish the dual meet for the final score.
At the Cascade tournament Saturday, Sublet placed first at 138, and Paasch was second at 182. Barnes was third at 152, and Weant was fourth at 113. Nelson and Crowston placed fifth at 106 and 145 respectively, Donaldson was sixth at 126, and Kiess was sixth at 170.
Keinonen said he was pleased with the way Sublet wrestled Saturday.
“Sublet wrestled great,” he said. “His fundamentals are about as solid as it gets and he just efficiently wears guys down.”
Paasch had a tough finals, Keinonen said, but he said it will be a good experience down the road.
“Wasn’t his best effort but its early and those are great matches to have under your belt at the end of the year,” Keinonen said. “Everybody competed hard and wrestled well at both McNary and Cascade.”
Willamina
After a good start to the season, Willamina had to overcome some adversity this week. It had to cancel its home meet and in return had to scramble to find some competition. Colton hosted the Justin Fraijo Invitational and invited the Bulldogs to compete. Because the decision to go was made at the last moment, Willamina was able to bring nine wrestlers to the tournament.
Willamina finished 24-8, here are the results:
In the 113-pound class, Jordan Combs defeated Nathan Johnson, and Combs took second place. In the 132-pound class Coty Brown went 4-0 to win first place. Edwin Villalobos pinned fellow Bulldogs teammate Keagan Davis in the 145-pound class to take first place while Davis took second.
Doug Steele finished third (3-2) in the 152-pound weight class, while Elijah Holt went 2-1 and took second in the 160-pound class.
Jacob Ward was 3-0 at 170 placed first. Tommy Cobb took first in the heavyweight class.
The Bulldogs compete Friday at the Rose City Championships at Westview in Hillsboro. Wrestling is set to begin at 2 p.m.
