Mac girls tennis wins first two matches

McMinnville defeated Dallas 5-3 Monday. Kerigan Morton and Nayelly Cervera won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. That was Mac’s only win in doubles vs. the Dragons.

In singles, Caitlan Baker won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Kelsey Allen won at No. 2 singles 4-6, 7-6, 6-2. Veronica Marquez won at No. 4 singles as well.

The Grizzlies won their first Pacific Conference match of the season Tuesday at Newberg. Baker won 6-4, 6-2, and Marquez won 6-1, 7-5.

In doubles, Samantha Purdy and Molly Olsen won in the No. 1 slot, 7-5, 7-5. Morton and Cervera won at No. 2 doubles 7-6, 6-1. Ellie Solem and Lauren Ulvang won 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

The Grizzlies play again at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Tigard.

Softball loses 4-1

The McMinnville softball team gave up three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and lost 4-1 Tuesday at Oregon City. McMinnville was scheduled to play Thursday at Rex Putnam. Mac plays at 5 p.m. Monday at home vs. Jesuit.

The Grizzlies, trailing 1-0 after three innings, tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, but the Pioneers came back in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.

Layne Pendleton had two hits to lead the Grizzlies. Allyson Ulbricht, Samantha Hensley and Mackenzie Davis each had one hit. Josie Smith scored Mac’s only run of the game.

Hensley took the loss. She pitched seven innings and allowed all four runs.

Mac had five hits and committed one error in the game. Oregon City had seven hits and committed two errors in the game.
