Mac baseball takes series from Spartans
The series went to McMinnville baseball, and with it a requisite shot of confidence.
David Brosius and Travis Allen combined to allow five hits on the mound, and the Grizzlies plated five runs in the first inning en route to a 10-2 victory over Hillsboro in Friday’s Class 6A Pacific Conference game at the McMinnville baseball field at Patton Middle School.
McMinnville improved to 16-4 overall (9-3 Pacific) and maintained its position of second in the conference to Tualatin. Hillsboro slipped to 8-11 overall (5-7 Pacific).
Zach Rhoads put the Grizzlies on the board initially, scoring on a Spartans throwing error when a third strike on Adrian Uscanga rolled away from the Hillsboro catcher. Uscanga reached first base safely and later scored on a Cameron Fox single.
Kade Mechals also hit an RBI double in the first inning, and Jacob Bannister hit a two-run single.
“If you want to call it energy, that’s what the guys came out with,” Grizzlies coach Jordan Harlow said. “They were excited about this matchup. They did a really nice job batting and getting good pitches to hit and taking advantage.”
Brosius, Fox, Mechals and Bannister finished the game with two hits apiece.
McMinnville begins a three-game series against rival Newberg, starting today in Newberg at 5 p.m. The Grizzlies host the Tigers Wednesday at 5 p.m.
