Linfield loses lead, then game in NCAA playoffs
Dec 7, 2013
WHITEWATER, Wis. – An early 17-0 lead for Linfield College melted, then disappeared, and the Wildcats lost 28-17 to UW-Whitewater in the NCAA Division III quarterfinal playoff game.
Linfield’s lead was the only thing that melted in Perkins Stadium, where temperatures barely reached the teens. UW-Whitewater quarterback Matt Behrendt threw four consecutive touchdown passes, three to Jake Kumerow, and Linfield’s high-powered offense was no match in the second half for the vaunted Warhawk defense.
Linfield quarterback Josh Yoder scored from 3 yards out for a 7-0 Wildcat lead, moments after Yoder connected with Evan Peterson for 39 years to the Warhawk 3-yard line.
On its next possession, Linfield turned the ball over on downs at the UWW 1-yard line, but the Wildcats quickly added 10 points with a field goal by Josh Repp and a 60-yard touchdown pass from Yoder to Peterson.
From there, it was all UWW. Linfield was plagued with second-half turnovers, including one that snuffed a Wildcat drive at the UWW 20-yard line.
The loss ends a record-setting scoring season for Linfield, which has strung the school’s continuing national record out to 58 consecutive winning seasons.
