Juveniles charged with Lower City Park assault
Two juveniles were arrested Monday night by McMinnville police for their involvement in the assault of a 16-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy in Lower City Park.
The female juveniles, ages 16 and 15, were charged with one count each of third-degree assault and second-degree disorderly conduct. The assault charge is a Class C felony and the disorderly conduct charge a Class B misdemeanor. They were also cited for being a minor in possession of alcohol. They were lodged in the Yamhill County Juvenile Detention Facility.
The News-Register generally only reports the names of juveniles charged with either a Class A or Class B felony.
Capt. Dennis Marks of the McMinnville police gave this account:
About 8:15 p.m., officers responded to a report of a fight or a disturbance in the creek bed area of the park. The initial report was that about seven individuals were assaulting a male and female. Officers contacted most of the involved individuals before they could leave the park.
Based on statements of those involved and of an independent witness, the suspects were with several adult and juvenile friends in the park.
The two girls began verbally harassing the victims who were walking through the park. The 15-year-old suspect escalated the situation by shoving and then punching the male victim and threatening the female.
He responded by fighting back. That reportedly upset friends of the suspects, at which time five males and females chased down and assisted the 15-year-old suspect in assaulting the male victim.
The victims were transported to the Willamette Valley Medical Center for treatment of injuries that included cuts and swelling to the head as the result of being kicked and punched.
More arrests are anticipated, according to Marks, who said police were provided a video recording of the incident by one of the individuals who was involved.
