Highway 18 crashes blamed on hail

Sgt. Brad Hessel of the Oregon State Police gave this account:

Reginald L. Pratt, 73, of Neskowin, was driving a 2001 Toyota pickup when he lost control on a hail-covered section of Highway 18 about 1:30 p.m. The pickup impacted an embankment and rolled onto its side.

His wife, Judith E. Pratt, 71, sustained minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.

Minutes later, Noah P. Maynard, 42, hometown and address unavailable, lost control in the same area in a 1996 Acura sedan, sustaining an immobilizing flat tire. As he got out, he turned to observe the crash involving the Pratts.

Just then, a 2011 Hyundai sedan driven by Michael D. Burgess, 64, of Newport, slid into a 2011 Honda sedan driven by Jacob M. Nicholson, 27, of Keizer. Both vehicles then slid into Maynard’s.

Burgess and Nicholson were belted in and escaped injury.
