High speed pursuit ends in McMinnville

Two adult males were taken into custody Saturday night following a high speed pursuit that began south of Dundee on Highway 99W and ended in a residential area of McMinnville.

Danial Martinez, 39, of Stayton, was charged with one count each of first-degree theft, attempt to elude a police officer, possession of a controlled substance/methamphetamine, reckless driving and recklesssly endangering another person. He was lodged in the Yamhill County Jail on $32,500 bail.

Michael Martin Trevino, 25, of Salem, was charged with one count of first-degree theft. He was lodged on $7,500 bail.

A Newberg-Dundee police officer initiated the pursuit, according to Yamhill Communications Agency radio traffic. The suspects were reportedly throwing items from the vehicle while speeding southbound on Highway 99W.

They exited Highway 99W and headed westbound on Highway 18 at speeds that were estimated at more than 90 mph. That's when McMinnville police got involved.

The suspects took the McMinnville exit from Highway 18 and were driving southbound in the northbound lane of travel  on the Three Mile Lane Bridge in an attempt to get around southbound traffic.

"We had officers set up at the Three Mile Lane exit and the Three Mile Lane overpass with spike strips so they (the suspects) would hit them regardless of whether they tried to come into town or continue west on Highway 18," Sgt. Josh Sheets of the McMinnville police said.

He said they made an "extremely dangerous decision" to head across the Three Mile Lane bridge in the wrong lane of travel in an attempt to avoid the spike strips. Traffic was stopped from accessing the overpass on the north side.

"An officer waiting on the off-ramp with the spike strips was able to quickly move them from the off-ramp to the overpass exit, where the vehicle hit them, deflating three of the tires," Sheets said.

The vehicle continued into town with three tires completely flat. It stopped in front of the Jim Doran automobile dealership at 1315 N.E. Third St.

The driver was immediately taken into custody. The passenger fled. A containment area was set up, and he was quickly spotted by officers hiding in the bushes in the backyard of a house in the area of Northeast Oregon and Second streets.

No injuries were reported. Traffic was detoured around the area by McMinnville police for a short period of time.
