Having fun with community service
Many people in McMinnville deserve to be named Outstanding Junior Citizen, Karin Mosier said. “I just wouldn’t think of myself in that group,” she said.
But other people did. That led to awarding the title to Mosier at the 2014 Distinguished Service Awards ceremony.
“It’s such an honor to be selected,” she said. But she downplays her role in the community.
“I feel like what I do, I enjoy so much,” she said, “It’s so much fun, it doesn’t seem like work.”
An attorney with Haugeberg, Rueter, Gowell, Fredricks & Higgins, Mosier is active in an array of community organizations and activities.
She serves on the board of the McMinnville Downtown Association, and was recently appointed co-chair of its economic improvement committee. She has served on the board of directors and scholarship committee of the McMinnville Kiwanis Club, and co-chaired its annual Bids for Kids Auction.
She has volunteered in the ASPIRE program at McMinnville High School, which matches students with adult mentors. She enjoyed working with teens in the program, but reluctantly decided to take a break after her daughter, Claire, was born.
Mosier’s first community involvement, after moving to McMinnville in 2008, was volunteering with the Mayor’s Charity Ball. “I’m passionate about Kids on the Block and what it supports,” she said of the after school enrichment program.
She also helped with the wine auction for several years. Her husband, Robert, is in the wine industry, so it was a natural fit.
He was working in Yamhill County while she was still attending law school in Portland. She comes from a family of lawyers, but chose law herself because it gives her a way to help people.
After graduating and moving to town, she worked initially with Gary Norris, then moved to Haugeberg, Rueter to practice family law in 2011. The company is very supportive of community service, she said.
Mosier said she’s glad she and her husband made the decision to settle in McMinnville.
“It’s the ideal small community,” she said. “Wonderful people, wonderful location, and a great community to raise a family.”
