Grizzlies improve to 5-0

KEIZER – Class 5A Cleveland hit Class 6A McMinnville in the mouth early, but the Grizzlies responded with a 13-5, six-inning victory over the Warriors at the Volcanoes Spring Break Tournament on Saturday.

Sophomore first baseman Sam Swenson powered McMinnville (5-0) at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored. Junior Kyle Casey went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Adrian Uscanga hit an RBI double for the Grizzlies.

Junior Riley McAnally started the game with two quick outs but allowed the Warriors (1-6) two runs on three hits in the first inning. McAnally settled down from there, allowing two hits over his next three innings pitched and retiring Cleveland in order on three pitches in the third inning.

McMinnville got on the board in the second inning when Garret Adams walked with the bases loaded but stranded three runners. The Grizzlies broke the game open with six runs in the third inning – Swenson doubled in one run and Casey singled in another – and three runs in the fourth inning.

McMinnville played at North Eugene on Monday night. The Grizzlies host Central Catholic tonight at 4:30 p.m. and Grant on Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m.

KEIZER – The Class 6A Grizzlies scored early and held on to defeat the Class 5A Storm at the Volcanoes Spring Break Tournament in Keizer on Thursday.
