Grizzlies extend winning streak to five games

Junior Gage Gubrud pitched a gem for the Grizzlies, throwing a complete-game, three-hit shutout vs. the Tigers (8-7, 2-4). Gubrud walked one and struck out nine batters in seven innings, and he needed to, because Mac scored just one run in support.

Kurtis Cooper drove in Mac’s lone run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

The Grizzlies are tied for first place in the Pacific Conference at 5-1. They have swept series vs. Forest Grove and Tigard after splitting a two-game series vs. Newberg. Mac takes on Hillsboro (11-4, 5-1) at 5 p.m. today at Hare Field in Hillsboro. The second game of the series is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Patton.


The McMinnville track team competed Friday at the Westview Team Challenge in Beaverton. The boys team finished third in the team scoring with 402 points, 38.5 behind winner Sheldon. The girls team finished in sixth place, scoring 349 points.

Throughout the day, McMinnville athletes continued to turn in Top 10 bests in Mac history. Senior Kane Kennedy lowered his personal best in the boys 400-meter run, winning in 49.46 seconds. That was second-best in program history. Tim Tatton won the boys discus with a toss of 148 feet, 2 inches, which is eighth best in school history.

Rylan Blair was second in the javelin and also earned himself a spot in the Mac record books. His throw of 165-01 was not only a personal best but also fifth best in Mac history. Tatton was third with a throw of 163-03, which was also another top-10 mark for him.

Tanner Scanlon finished second in the boys long jump as well.

In the relays, the boys 4x100-meter relay team of Kennedy, Spencer Payne, Taylor Vicknair and Scanlon finished second in 42.94. That was the third fastest time in program history.

On the girls side, Lucy Bellville won the girls triple jump with a mark of 33-10.5 that was ninth best in school history. Bethany Mohler also won the girls javelin with a throw of 116-08 that moved her into fifth place on the Mac all-time list.

Freshman Whitney Rich also added her name to the 3,000-meter record at Mac. Her time of 10:49.48 Friday put her in third place in the race and fifth all-time in Mac school history. It was the fastest time run by a girl at Mac since 2006.

Montanna Gubrud also finished second in the long jump in 16-06, 10th best in school history.

Other scores

The McMinnville girls tennis team defeated Glencoe 7-1 on the road Friday. … The Mac boys tennis team was up 5-1 at home Friday vs. Glencoe when the match was postponed because of rain. ... Mac softball lost 5-0 Friday vs. Tualatin.
