From intern to full time
NEWBERG — Jennifer Mick started at Climax Portable Machining & Welding Systems when she was just 15, working in the tool center as a manufacturing assistant, assembling work order packets, copying drawings and issuing raw material.
"I've just had a lot of opportunity here after graduation," Mick said. She was offered a position in purchasing and, come June, she will have logged 12 years with the company.
"I feel very fortunate," Mick said.
Kendra Martin felt her internship in 2009 was a great experience. Her father also works in the company. She said she was selected to be in Climax's marketing department because of her experience with Photoshop. She's now the company's full time social media director and also works in marketing administration and with parts and accessories.
Jordan Mitts spent two summers and some school time interning at Climax Portable Machining & Welding systems in Newberg. Today, he works full time as a tool curb attendant, making sure the tool inventory is sharp and accurate.
Joni George, the company's chief cultural officer, said said that typically one intern per year is hired for a full time position. She estimates there are about a dozen now working at Climax that first started during their high school years.
