Fire ravages former Meeker home
Firefighters responded about 1:30 p.m. to a 5,000-square-foot residence at 21700 S.W. Broadmead Road.
The home is owned by Samuel J. and Janel M. Denton, according to Amity Fire Chief Bruce Hubbard. He said Samuel was on a fishing trip and Janel was in McMinnville when the fire broke out.
“We got a good stop on the fire, thanks to our people and a lot of outside resources,” Hubbard said. “That’s something I’m pretty proud of.”
The cause has not been determined, but the fire started in the garage.
The roof, attic and upstairs living area sustained significant fire damage. The main floor and daylight basement sustained heat, smoke and water damage.
The home was built in 1952 by the late Phil Meeker, who founded the family’s feed and seed business in the 1930s. He retired at 80 and died at 81.
The fire was reported by a Dayton Fire District lieutenant who happened to be in the area. More than three-dozen firefighters from Amity, Dayton, McMinnville, Polk County, Sheridan and Willamina responded with more than a dozen pieces of equipment.
Water was not immediately available on site, so six 3,000-gallon water tenders were pressed into action.
