Six times, the McMinnville volleyball team faced match point against rival Newberg in the pivotal fifth game.
Six times, the Grizzlies staved it off.
The crowd at McMinnville High School reached a fever pitch and the student section rushed the court -- after postgame handshakes, of course -- as the Grizzlies outlasted the Tigers, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 20-18, on Thursday night.
"It was exciting," McMinnville coach Ben Patterson said. "We're pretty fortunate to come out on the winning end tonight."
Madison Vicknair led the Grizzlies (6-2 Class 6A Pacific Conference) with 16 kills, four blocks, and three service aces. Mac junior Taylor Petersen added eight kills and five blocks to the winning effort.
Rachel Thompson paced Newberg (7-1 Pacific Conference) with 17 kills and four blocks, and Tigers outside hitter Taylor Burger recorded eight kills.
