Defense gives Dayton a leg up

DAYTON – The Dayton baseball team had only four hits against Class 3A West Valley League rival Sheridan, but it made each one count.

The Pirates scored six runs in the fourth inning and did not commit a defensive error in a 9-3 victory over the Spartans.

“We put the ball in play,” Pirates coach Roger Lorenzen said. “We made them try to make plays and they had a tough time fielding it.”

Catcher Chase Young contributed three of the four hits on the night for Dayton (1-3, 1-0 WVL), while Pirates pitchers Jarred Montgomery and Tyler Clark scattered nine hits over the seven innings.

Boone Meyer went 4-for-4 with a double for Sheridan (4-3, 0-1 WVL), and Jackson Meyer went 2-for-4 with a double. The Spartans’ hitting performance was overshadowed by eight defensive errors, including four during the decisive fourth inning.

“One thing talked about after the game is, we got this out of our system,” Sheridan coach Todd Peterson said. “We know we’re a better team than that. We’ve got to stay positive. It’s just a little unfortunate because we didn’t play better defense.”

Dayton plays at Willamina today at 5 p.m., while the Spartans host Amity today at 5 p.m.
