Dayton bops Blanchet Catholic, 7-6, in season opener

DAYTON – The Pirates pounded out 11 base knocks, and came back from a 6-2 deficit to shock Blanchet Catholic, 7-6, in Thursday’s matchup held at Dayton High School.

Dayton scored four runs in the sixth inning, then a final tally in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback and earn the walk-off victory. Sabino Corona doubled to lead off the inning, stole third, then scored the winning run off the bat of Tristan Fergus.

Josiah Primbs earned the win for Dayton after taking over for starter Kole Stuck in the third inning. Primbs pitched five innings, surrendering three runs, while striking out five batters.

Fergus paved the way offensively for the Pirates, going 2-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Corona managed two hits and crossed the plate twice. Stuck collected a hit, scored and drove in a run.

Next for Dayton (1-0, 0-0 WVL) is today’s road game at Colton. First pitch is 4:30 p.m.
