Community Connect to offer free services::2
Jun 13, 2013
The fifth annual Community Connect event, set from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, at Sue Buel Elementary School, 1985 S.E. Davis St., will feature not only free services for those in need, but also free information about local resources they might tap. It will be staged at the McMinnville School District Conference Center, located in the school’s west parking lot.
Those with medical or dental needs will undergo screening on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 9 a.m. The screening will run until noon or available slots run out.
The event, designed for low-income residents, is part of Yamhill County’s 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness. It drew more than 600 participants last year.
Participants will learn about programs offering help with housing, medical care, emergency shelter, education, weatherization, rent, utility and veterans’ needs. They will be offered free food, haircuts, bikes, bike helmets and bike repair services.
Basic health and skin cancer screenings for adults will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. The Red Cross will conduct a blood drive from 12:30 to 6 p.m. as well.
Shauna Williams, an intern working for the Yamhill Community Action Partnership, said YCAP will be giving away 60 children’s bicycles. She said the bikes were obtained through YCAP’s Pedal Power Partnership with Waste Management Inc., operator of a garbage company in Newberg and landfill in McMinnville.
Williams said blood donors are still needed, along with volunteers to assist with the staging of the event and donated food that can be distributed. “We also have a huge need for veterinarians and hair dressers,” she added.
The Yamhill County Transit Area will offer free bus service all day June 21, on a countywide basis. In addition, YCAP will have a bus running from the Yamhill County Courthouse stop to Sue Buell Elementary approximately every half hour during the event.
To schedule a blood drive appointment, volunteer to assist with the event or get more information, contact Elise Hui at 503-883-4318 or email@example.com. Blood drive appointments may also be made by visiting www.redcrossblood.org and using the sponsor code CommunityConnection.
