Century's Sheffer sinks Mac boys late

HILLSBORO – A basket by Century’s Jordan Sheffer with five seconds remaining proved the difference as the Jaguars stunned the McMinnville boys basketball team, 43-41, in Friday night’s Class 6A Pacific Conference game.

Century (4-9, 3-0) took a 21-17 lead entering halftime after outscoring the Grizzlies (9-3, 1-2) 13-5 in the second quarter. McMinnville kept the Jaguars within striking distance, tying the game entering the fourth quarter and going back and forth with Century before Sheffer’s basket.

“They made muscle plays,” Grizzlies coach Willie Graham said of the Jaguars. “They really scrapped and played hard. I thought our guys played hard.”

Jamel Liggins led all scorers with 15 points for Century. Gage Gubrud and Bryce Anderson each scored 13 points for McMinnville, with Vince Boumann contributing nine points.

Mac plays at Tigard today at 6:45 p.m. before hosting Forest Grove Friday at 7:15 p.m.

HILLSBORO – The Jaguars jumped out to a 23-9 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Grizzlies in Friday night’s Class 6A Pacific Conference game.

“They shot really well and we missed a lot of shots,” Grizzlies coach Sean Coste said. “They played a 2-3 zone; we’re just struggling making shots against the zone.

“Almost everyone in the league is running a 2-3 zone. We’ve just got to keep working on how to be comfortable in the zone.”

McMinnville (3-9, 0-3) cut the deficit to eight points in the fourth quarter before two players were whistled for technical fouls after a disputed call.

Emily Bliven led the Grizzlies with 11 points, and Montanna Gubrud added nine points. Chantal Castaneda led Century (11-2, 2-1) with 16 points.

McMinnville hosts Tigard tonight at 6:45 p.m., then hosts Forest Grove Friday at 5:45 p.m.
