Carlton mayor wins leadership award

Oriet received the Gwen VanDenBosch Regional Leadership Award for her work with cooperative, regional and intergovernmental initiatives. The honor goes to one elected official each year.

City Manager Chad Olsen said the honor was well-deserved. Whether she’s working on behalf of Carlton or the region, he said, “she brings her ‘can-do, never-say-no’ attitude with her every day.”

A council member for 27 years, Oriet has served as mayor since 2002. She was initally appointed following the resignation of the previous mayor, then was re-elected in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012.

She has been a member of the COG board since 2005. She has also been a member of COG’s Community Partnership Board.

She served on the Yamhill Communications Agency Board from 1998 to 2006. She has also served on the Carlton Together Cares Board and Riverbend Landfill Stewardship Committee.

Last year, she created a new nonprofit, the Carlton Community Foundation, to raise funds for community events and needs. She assisted last fall with the Haunted Granary and the Mayor’s Masquerade Ball, which together raised about $10,000 for community causes.
