Car fished from river
Instead of taking fish out of the river, he dumped a car into it — his wife’s brand new car, in fact.
About 9:30 a.m., Mejia arrived at the bridge spanning the South Yamhill River, midway between Amity and Bellevue, in his wife’s new 2012 Kia Soul. But he drove too far onto the wet, muddy grass covering the steep-sloped embankment on the south side of the river about 2.5 miles west of Amity.
The car began to slide uncontrollably. As it gained momentum, he decided discretion was the better part of valor and leaped out.
The car floated downriver about 100 yards, then began to sink, according to Oregon State Police Trooper Chad Drew.
“At least he got out of the car,” Drew said. “Otherwise, it would’ve been a worse situation.”
An Oregon Department of Transportation incident response team was brought in to assess the situation. It called in a dive team to locate the vehicle, which was towed out Monday.
