Bulldogs at top of their class

WILLAMINA – The Willamina girls basketball team’s quest for a Class 3A West Valley League title continues unabated.

The Bulldogs are the lone team with an undefeated league record entering this week as they improved to 5-0 in WVL play (13-2 overall) in a 68-16 victory over rival Sheridan.

Willamina senior Whitney Anderson had been plagued by illness for much of the past week – she missed the Bulldogs’ victory over Colton on Monday night and played limited minutes against Dayton on Wednesday night. Against the Spartans, Anderson came off the bench at the best of Willamina coach Tom Anderson, Whitney’s father, and still managed to score a game-high 12 points.

The Bulldogs displayed balance against a Sheridan team that provided resistance in accordance with its 2-10 (1-4 WVL) record. Kyra Toney and Kasey Anderson each scored 10 points for Willamina, while Zoey Holsclaw and Drea Grijalva each scored eight points.

“You always want to come to play,” Tom Anderson said. “I thought the girls did that. It’s good that those girls are coming in and playing well. I was most impressed with how we shared the ball.”

Facing a taller, stronger, faster and more experienced squad, Sheridan buckled under pressure with turnovers. The Spartans turned the ball over 29 times and scored just five points after halftime.

“Willamina is a very good and powerful team,” Sheridan coach Gary Mahe said.

Jill Nichols led the Spartans with five points, while Samantha Mack and Alicia Krauthoefer each scored four points.

Willamina travels to Portland to face Westside Christian today at 5:30 p.m. Sheridan hosts Colton today at 6 p.m.

Teddi Hop led all scorers with 14 points for Dayton. Sydney France led Willamina with 12 points, and Kyra Toney added 10 points.

“Give them credit, they did a good job defensively,” Bulldogs coach Tom Anderson said. “They’re an athletic group. I don’t know if we just relaxed for a little bit, or they played better defense, but after (the first quarter) it was a pretty even game.”

WILLAMINA – The Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-6 halftime lead on the Vikings and never looked back en route to a Class 3A West Valley League victory on Jan. 13.
