Arrest made in Newberg shooting

NEWBERG - A Newberg man has been arrested in connection with Thursday night's report of shots being fired in the area of the Newberg High School athletic field while a girls' soccer match was in progress. No injuries were reported.

Steven Scott Smith, 53, was charged with one count of second-degree disorderly conduct, in addition to four counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. Additional charges are pending.

The weapon charge is a Class C felony. Recklessly endangering is a Class A misdemeanor and disorderly conduct a Class B misdemeanor.

Scott was lodged in the Yamhill County Jail on $32,500 bail pending Friday's tentative arraignment hearing in circuit court.

Police gave this account of the incident:

Shortly after 8 p.m., it was reported that shots were heard being fired in the area of the Newberg High athletic field. Girls' soccer teams from Newberg and Centennial of Gresham were playing a match at the time.

Sounds described as "pops" were reportedly heard within a short period of time. Moments later, a school administrator said a more distinctive sound was heard, as if a projectile may have hit a set of metal bleachers on the east side of the field.

Officers responded, and in the court of their investigation, took Smith into custody. He lives in the neighborhood adjacent to Mabel Rush Elementary School and the field.

A small caliber projectile was found by officers on the track near where bleachers are located.

The match was stopped and about 150 student athletes, spectators and staff were evacuated from the field area to the Newberg High gymnasium during the initial stage of the investigation. Area streets were blocked and access into the area was restricted.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Newberg-Dundee police at 503-538-8321.
