Ex-student charged with Facebook threats; school doors locked

Update: A former McMinnville High School student has been charged with first-degree disorderly conduct after writing threatening Facebook posts, McMinnville Police said.

Entrance doors to McMinnville School District buildings are locked today as a precaution in the wake of Friday's devastating school shooting in Connecticut.

To gain entrance to a school, parents and visitors will need to knock or ring a bell, then be admitted to the office by school staff. Other exterior doors are also locked, as usual.

The extra locked doors give us "one more opportunity to assess who's in our buildings," said Superintendent Maryalice Russell.

Russell said extra administrators will be in each building today. McMinnville police and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office will provide extra law enforcement presence around all schools.

Administrators considered canceling evening activities this week, but decided to let tonight's high school choir and band concert and Tuesday's basketball game go on as usual. Extra security will be on hand.

All elementary and middle school after hours activities have been canceled.

Mac High cancelled today's planned assembly, at which results of the annual food drive were to be announced.

McMinnville schools are in session today and Tuesday, then will let out for winter vacation. Teachers have a furlough day on Wednesday. Classes will resume Jan. 2, 2013.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
