Community Sports: July 19

NEWBERG – Thirty-nine local athletes competed at the Special Olympic State Games held in Newberg on June 9-10. In total, there were 2,600 athletes, coaches and chaperones who attended the Track and Field, Bocce, Golf, and Softball events over the two-day competition.

The Track and Field events were held at Newberg High School. Yamhill County competitors collected 50 medals across all events, including 17 gold, 14 silver and 29 bronze. In addition to the medalists, Yamhill athletes also earned 12 fourth-place, 13 fifth-place, five sixth-place, five seventh-place and two eighth-place finishes.

Yamhill coach Ron Wright had the largest team of athletes in his tenure as head of the track and field program. The team had strong support for each athlete competing at the state meet.

Bowling, volleyball and swimming, which will begin in September, are next on the agenda for the Yamhill County special Olympians.
