Woodburn man drowns in the Willamette

WHEATLAND - A Woodburn man drowned Sunday afternoon on the Marion County side of the Willamette River at Mission State Park near the Wheatland Ferry boat ramp. The Oregon State Police identified him as Dagoberto Nava Castro, 36.

Law enforcement and medical personnel responded to the area about 4:15 p.m. on a report that an adult male had jumped off a dock, resurfaced and then disappeared without resurfacing. He was not wearing a flotation device, and there are swift undercurrents in that part of the river.

A search of the river was launched and a dive team recovered the body about 9 p.m. in the area where Castro disappeared.

In addition to OSP, the Marion and Yamhill County Sheriff's Office, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue Dive Team, Woodburn Fire Rescue Team and the Marion County Medical Examiner responded.
