Linfield athletes at NCAA Championships

Linfield 400-meter runner Jake Mihelic and 60-meter hurdler Dallas Edge will be representing the Wildcats at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships, held today and Saturday at Grinnell College’s Charles Benson Bear Recreation and Athletic Center.

Mihelic, a junior from Fort Collins, Colorado, is the first Wildcat male to participate in the D-III indoor national championships since 2010. He is the reigning men’s 400 meter champion at the D-III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2015.

Edge, a junior from Gig Harbor, Washington, is competing in her fourth national championship meet. She earned All-America honors in the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 2015.

 

Mac senior Flores in all-star wrestling meet

McMinnville High School senior wrestler Alvaro Flores was named a member of Team Oregon in the 120-pound weight class for the 2016 Shultz Cup, held Saturday at Ashland High School.

The Shultz Cup pits all-star teams of high school wrestlers from Oregon, Washington and California in dual meets against one another.

Flores finished second in the OSAA Class 6A State Wrestling Championships at 120 pounds on Feb. 27.

 

Panthers Rugby hosts local tournament

The Valley Panthers Rugby Club will host the 2016 Oregon All-State Girls Rugby Tournament at Duniway Middle School in McMinnville on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thirteen high school girls clubs from around Oregon will compete in Saturday’s tournament. Cycle and Sip event coming March 13

Cyclists, start your pedals. The Cycle & Sip bike ride, held in conjunction with the McMinnville Wine & Food Classic, will take place Sunday, March 13, at 9:30 a.m.

Cost of participation is $60 and includes entry into the Wine & Food Classic; proceeds from the event will benefit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and McMinnville’s St. James School. Riders may pick up their packets beginning at 7 a.m. at Evergreen Wings & Waves Waterpark, 500 Northeast Captain Michael King Smith Way, McMinnville, the starting and end point of the ride. The 30-mile bike ride will be guided through mostly flat country roads around Yamhill County.

Early packet pickup may take place Saturday, March 12, from 12 to 7 p.m. at the Eola Hills Tasting Room, 448 N.E. 3rd Street, McMinnville.

Senior Men’s Golf Club seeks members

The McMinnville Senior Men’s Golf Club is extending its membership to interested golfers from Yamhill County and surrounding areas ages 55 and older.

The Senior Men’s Golf Club’s 2016 season begins April 18 and ends Oct. 28, with an end-of-year banquet to follow. Members regularly play events at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg (Mondays), Cross Creek Golf Course in Dallas (Wednesdays) and Bayou Golf Course in McMinnville (Fridays) and travel to courses outside the area for seven events. Members are charged a fee of $65.

Montessori school hosts April races

The McMinnville Montessori School will present the 6th Annual Discover Spring Run on Saturday, April 23 at Discovery Meadows Community Park in McMinnville.

Races of 10, 5k and one mile all begin at 9 a.m. with a kids’ fun run at 10:30 a.m. The 10k and 5k races cost $35 for adults and $15 for children under 18; the one mile run and the kids fun run are $10 for all participants. Preregistration and day-of-race registration are available.

Linfield hosts first all-sports clinic

The Linfield College athletic program will host their inaugural Play Like a Wildcat all-sports clinic from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29 for boys and girls in kindergraten through eighth grade.

Volunteers from the women’s basketball, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball programs, as well as the cheer team and athletic training program, will be on hand to provide instruction. Cost is $10 and includes a t-shirt and a picture with Linfield’s mascot, Mack the Wildcat.
