Eagles end seasons for Sheridan girls basketball

TIGARD – Sheridan girls basketball mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback against Westside Christian in the Class 3A West Valley League playoffs, but the Spartans’ season ended at the hands of the Eagles.

Ronni Vanzant made two layups and Natalia Rentsch added another basket in the game’s final two minutes, part of an 18-point fourth quarter for Sheridan. Nonetheless, the Eagles made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Spartans, 43-41, Tuesday evening and advance in the WVL playoffs.

Kiatia Mack led Sheridan in scoring with 10 points, also grabbing four rebounds. Vanzant finished the contest with seven points and six rebounds and Sam Mack added nine points.

Kassidy Ellis and Sianna Williams each scored five points, with Ellis grabbing seven rebounds for the Spartans.

“They’ve come such a long way from early this year and even last year. It’s just been such a pleasure to be able to coach them and for them to want to be coached,” said Spartans head coach Jordan Batey. “I was telling them, we may have lost tonight, but for us to not only be playing in a playoff game but for us to have almost won a playoff game, it’s a testament to them and their dedication and wanting to get better. For them to be able to battle and come down to the wire is pretty spectacular.”

Sheridan rebounded from a 1-8 start to its season to go 6-19 overall and 4-10 in the West Valley League.

Westside Christian played at Willamina Thursday night as the WVL playoffs continued.
