Oregon woman, daughter tested for Zika virus

GRANTS PASS — Health officials in southern Oregon say a woman and her infant daughter are being tested for the Zika virus, the mosquito-borne illness linked to a wave of birth defects in Brazil.

The Grants Pass Daily Courier reports that Josephine County's director of public health, Diane Hoover, made the announcement at Thursday's meeting of county commissioners.

Hoover says tests are being handled by the federal Centers for Disease Control and results should be back within three weeks.

Details were scant about the mother and daughter, and where they may have traveled. The World Health Organization has recommended that pregnant women avoid traveling to Central America and the Caribbean.
