Sheriff's office will increase holiday patrols


The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office will increase patrols today and throughout the weekend with an emphasis of impaired drivers.

In addition to the regular flow of holiday traffic, the Civil War football game between Oregon State and Oregon will be played at 1 p.m. Friday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.

Sheriff Tim Svenson reminds everyone who sees a suspected impaired drive to call 911. These are signs to look for:

* Swerving or weaving in and out of a lane.

* Stopping abruptly at traffic signs or signals.

* Making unusually wide turns.

* Driving with headlights off at night.

* Driving at a much slower speed than the posted speed limit.

If you plan to host a dinner or party or attend a dinner or party where alcohol or marijuana is being served you can take some precautions beforehand to avoid what a tragedy. They are:

* If you host a party and provide alcohol or marijuana, make sure to also include food and non-alcoholic beverages.

* Monitor your guest's consumption and take the keys from a guest who has had too much.

* Use public transportation or a taxi.

* Ask a friend who has not been consuming for a ride home.

* Always wear your seatbelt.

* Promote the use of designated drivers and stop impaired family or friends from driving.
