County loses bid for Evergreen building

Kit Johnston Farms, a Dayton nursery operation seeking to acquire a pair of mirror-image buildings on the campus of the now-bankrupt Evergreen International Airlines, was outbid in a Friday auction conducted in federal bankruptcy court in Delaware.

Jackson Family Wines, a California wine colossus that has bought up more than 800 acres of local vineyard land in the last two years, submitted the winning bid, however the sale still must go before a Delaware federal bankruptcy judge for final approval. The sale apparently dashes county hopes to move its public works department from cramped and obsolete quarters on Lafayette Avenue to the eight-acre Evergreen site.
