Crown's brace powers McMinnville in GVC home opener

The McMinnville Grizzlies demonstrated that they can give as good as they get Tuesday in their first home game of the Class 6A Greater Valley Conference season against South Salem on Tuesday at Wortman Stadium.

After conceding in the first minute of their non-league finale against Jesuit, Jonah Crown scored for the Grizzlies in the first minute of their 5-1 win over the Saxons.

Crown made it a brace in the 18th minute, and Efrain Rivas added on in the 32nd minute to make it 3-0 at half time. Cameron Autencio assisted on all three first half goals for the Grizzlies.

Jakob Wright took an assist from Crown to score in the 55th minute, but Irvin Figueroa’s challenge in the 69th minute just inside the left corner of the penalty area resulted in a controversial penalty kick that the Saxons converted to deprive the Grizzlies of a clean sheet. Jose Bautista pushed the margin back to four in the final minute.

McMinnville (6-0-2, 2-0 GVC) pushes their winning streak to four matches. They’ll next take the pitch in Salem for a 4 p.m. match against Sprague on Friday.
