Stayton woman killed in Hopewell crash

HOPEWELL - A Stayton woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in the Hopewell area on Lafayette Highway.

The Oregon State Police gave this account:

About 1:15 p.m., law enforcement and medical personnel responded to the scene. The investigation determined Arlie D. Ellis, 74, of Stayton, was operating a 1999 Subaru Legacy southbound when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2015 Toyota Prius driven by Richard J. Mafit, 58, of Salem.

A passenger, Marion E. Ellis, 75, of Stayton, was pronounced dead at the scene. Richard Mafit and Arlie Ellis were transported by ground ambulance to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The highway was closed for three hours while the investigation took place. The Dayton and McMinnville fire departments, Yamhill County Sheriff's Office and Oregon Department of Transportation also responded.
