I-5 closed hours after fatal shooting in police pursuit

GRANTS PASS - Authorities say Oregon State Police shot and killed a man who was wanted in the slaying of his girlfriend in Northern California.

Police in Yreka, California, said they got a report of a possible homicide Wednesday, and found 34-year-old Erika Lemere dead in the garage of her house.

Investigators identified 32-year-old Kaleb Landon, who lived with her, as a suspect and Oregon State police located him in Sunny Valley, where he had family, about 15 miles north of Grants Pass, Yreka Police Chief Brian Bowles said.

Troopers shot him dead after he crashed into a truck northbound on Interstate 5, state police spokesman Lt. Bill Fugate said.

“It's a very tragic incident,” Bowles said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and officers involved.”

Northbound traffic on Interstate 5 was blocked for five hours late Wednesday and early Thursday while investigators gathered evidence, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. Cars were put on a detour over narrow mountain roads, but trucks pulled over and parked.

Authorities did not immediately divulge details on Lemere's death and the shooting of Landon.
