Man dies while swimming in Oregon's Clackamas River

GLADSTONE — Authorities say a 22-year-old man who had been swimming with a cousin in the Clackamas River has died.

The Clackamas County water rescue team located the man in about seven feet of water Tuesday evening but he could not be revived. He was not immediately identified.

Lt. Kirk Semple with the Gladstone Fire Department says the area is where the Clackamas meets the Willamette River.

Sheriff's Sgt. Nathan Thompson says the man went to Dahl Beach with his aunt, uncle and cousin and decided to swim across the river with his cousin. They made it across but he got in trouble on the way back. Thompson says the cousin tried to help, got pulled under a few times and finally had to let go to keep from drowning himself.

The Oregonian reports that Thompson says the river at that point ranges from 100 to 200 feet in width.
