Three Grizzlies headed for Nationals

CORVALLIS – Three McMinnville High School wrestlers are off to North Dakota to represent Oregon in the Junior/Cadet Wrestling National Championships.

Brian Barnes won first place in his weight class in the Junior Greco-Roman and Junior Freestyle brackets in the Oregon USA Wrestling State Tournament, held May 2-3 at Crescent Valley High School. He will be joined on the Oregon Junior team by Alvaro Flores, who took fourth in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle in his weight class.

Freshman Michael Abeyta took second in Junior Freestyle, third in Cadet Freestyle and first in Cadet Greco-Roman. Though he qualified as a Junior division wrestler, Abyeta will compete in nationals in the younger Cadet Division.

Barnes is the reigning Class 6A 195-pound state champion. Flores took fourth place at 106 pounds at the OSAA Class 6A Wrestling State Championships; Abeyta finished sixth at 138 pounds.

The National Championships will run July 18-25 at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota.

Valley Panthers rugby to play for 3rd
