NEWBERG - A McMinnville man was arrested Tuesday night on charges alleging he stabbed an adult female in a rural area of Newberg.

Andrew Alan Nelson, 32, was charged with one count each of second-degree assault, Class B felony, and unlawful use of a weapon, Class C felony. Second-degree assault carries potential Measure 11 mandatory minimum sentencing guideline implications.

He is lodged in the Yamhill County Jail without bail pending arraignment in circuit court.

Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Ray gave this account:

About 3 p.m. Tuesday, law enforcement personnel were dispatched to a call in the 7000 block of Northeast Dog Ridge Road.

The call was initially reported as a possible shooting, but was later determined to be a stabbing.

About the same time, McMinnville police received a call about a possible stabbing in the 1400 block of Northeast Irvine Street, near McMinnville High School. Nelson lives on Irvine.

Police checked the Irvine Street address and found nothing.

Deputies and Newberg-Dundee police officers, along with medical personnel, responded to the Dog Ridge Road area.

Upon arrival, deputies located the unidentified victim who had sustained a non-life threatening shoulder wound. She was transported by Newberg Fire Department ambulance to Providence Newberg Medical Center, treated and released.

The suspect was identified as Nelson. The victim reported she was stabbed while seated in the driver's seat of a car while Nelson was outside the vehicle. She said the stabbing occurred after an exchange of words with Nelson.

After she was stabbed, she drove away, with Nelson holding onto the car. She stopped a short distance later and the victim and an unidentified adult female passenger fled on foot and sought help. Nelson then drove off in the car.

"He and the passenger are acquaintances," Ray said. "It's not clear if any charges are going to be filed against him for taking the car because I think it's a vehicle he uses on a regular basis."

Law enforcement personnel from different agencies attempted to locate him. It was believed he fled the area in a blue Honda sedan.

Through tips from acquaintances and relatives, Nelson was located on foot in the area of Northeast Highway 99W and McDaniel Lane in McMinnville. He was taken into custody by McMinnville police. The vehicle was seized.

Sheriff Tim Svenson praised the interagency cooperation that led to Nelson's quick apprehension.

"I'm very proud of the way our agencies in Yamhill County support and assist each other when the need arises," he said.

"In this particular case, it was instrumental in getting Mr. Nelson into custody quickly and without further incident."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Nicole Rickles at 503-434-7506.
