SALEM - Police said excessive speed was a major factor in a fully-loaded lumber truck, driven by an Amity man, rolling over Monday afternoon on the Salem Parkway.

Lt. Steve Birr of the Salem police identified the driver as Douglas Barnes, 46, who was driving for Barnes Boys Trucking. He was not injured. No citations have been issued, but the crash remains under investigation.

Birr gave this account:

Barnes was operating a 1985 Peterbilt pulling two flat bed trailers southbound on the Parkway. He was negotiating a curve onto Commercial Street N.E. when the rig rolled.

Lumber spilled onto the roadway and into a manufactured home park. The crash also sheared off a utility pole and a diesel spill had to be contained.

Traffic was rerouted around the crash while the scene was cleared and an investigation took place.
