His wife, a passenger in the vehicle he was driving, was injured.

Matthew B. Childress, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Oregon State Police. Driving unbelted, he was partially ejected as his vehicle rolled into a ditch.

The agency gave this account:

Childress was northbound in a Ford SUV when he crossed the centerline for unknown reasons and collided with a southbound dump truck pulling a pup trailer.

The truck was hauling scrap metal for Wilkins Trucking. The driver, who escaped injury, was identified as Raul Gutierrez-Torres, 43, of Wood Village.

Childress' wife, Christine A. Schneible, 32, of McMinnville, was transported by McMinnville Fire Department ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center. Her injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.

In addition to OSP, the Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon Department of Transportation and Dayton and Lafayette fire departments responded.
