New UO softball stadium may displace WWI memorial

EUGENE — The construction of a new women's softball stadium at the University of Oregon may displace a World War I memorial that was constructed in the 1930s.

The soldiers memorial is a wall with ornate wrought iron gates and the words Howe Field.

The university's construction manager, Tom Shepard, tells The Register-Guard the memorial may be relocated. Construction is scheduled to begin in May.

The memorial was a federal Works Progress Administration project funded in part by student body money.
