Kennedy's three TDs power Mac to big win at HilHi
Senior Kane Kennedy scored three touchdowns — two in the third quarter — to help the McMinnville Grizzlies overcome a slow start and beat Hillsboro 42-6 Friday at Hare Field.
Kennedy scored on plays of 2, 63 and 3 yards and had 119 total yards for the Grizzlies (4-2).
“He had a good game,” McMinnville coach Don Rutschman said. “He’s fast, and we have a little deception that goes a long with it. He’s been playing really well.”
Senior Spencer Payne scored two touchdowns and rushed for 159 yards on 19 carries.
The Grizzlies led 14-0 after the first quarter after junior quarterback Gage Gubrud hit Grant Rubado for a 5-yard touchdown with 8:17. Mac went 69 yards on its opening drive.
Kennedy scored Mac’s next touchdown with one minute left in the first quarter on a 2-yard run.
The Spartans (0-6) held the Grizzlies scoreless in the second quarter, in large part because of four forced fumbles, though they didn’t recover any of them.
“I thought they played pretty doggone well, especially the first half,” Rutschman said. “We did just enough to get a couple of touchdowns on the board, but it wasn’t very pretty.”
The Grizzlies got rolling in the second half. After allowing Hillsboro to score on the opening drive of the half (Mac blocked the PAT), Payne scored from one yard out, then Kennedy scored on a 63-yard run with 3:00 left in the third quarter.
Kennedy added his third touchdown on a 3-yard pass from Gubrud with 7 seconds left in the third quarter. Payne then bust loose for a 47-yard touchdown with 5:45 left in the game.
Mac rushed for 84 yards in the first half and finished with 315 yards for the game.
“We got rolling offensively the second half,” Rutschman said. “It’s really the tale of two halves.”
Guburd was 11-of-13 for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Israel caught four passes for 60 yards.
Kennedy rushed four times for 81 yards and caught five passes for 38 yards. Rubado caught two passes for 11 yards.
Gubrud rushed six times for 31 yards, and Christian Medina had 24 yards as well.
The Grizzlies play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tualatin, which lost 41-0 Friday at Tigard.
